Upper Respiratory Tract Infection In Kittens.

This disease is also called URTI or Cat Flu.

1. Feline Upper Respiratory Tract Infection { URTI } or Cat Flu. I commonly see kittens which are sneezing, coughing and have a stuffed up nose and eye discharge. This is often due to a condition called Feline Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, this is a highly infectious disease. It is usually viral in origin although secondary bacterial infections can occur. And other symptoms could include lethargy and lack of appetite.

2. It is generally not life-threatening if the kitten has a normal immune system, although affected kittens can be very miserable and down for a week or so, thankfully with care they often make a good recovery. This condition is frequently seen in stray and feral kittens as well as in places like barn cat colonies.

3. However, be aware that some but not all of these kittens will go on to develop episodes of chronic disease in later life. They may have bouts of sneezing and eye discharge from time to time. But most adult cats are much less affected than kittens.

4. Since there is no effective direct treatment for the viruses which cause this disease treatment is often just supportive while the disease runs its course. That said a course of antibiotics will help stop secondary bacterial infections and antibiotic eye drops are often required, this combination can make all the difference. Other than this it is just a case of good nursing care and keeping the kitten comfortable eating and hydrated to give its immune system a chance to kick in.

5. Since antibiotics are prescription drugs your best plan is to have your local vet check an affected kitten over ASAP and get treatment underway.

6. Be aware that is one of the diseases which you can vaccinate kittens and cats against.
