Typical symptoms of cat flu { Feline URTI } in an adult cat.

1. Where an adult cat is sneezing this is commonly due to a disease called Feline Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, { URTI or cat Flu }, often the cause is viral, but bacteria can play their part as well. Sneezing is not the only common symptom though, other symptoms such as coughing, a stuffed up nose and eye discharge are also possible. You may also see lethargy and lack of appetite.

2. This is generally not a life-threatening condition in adult cats, while infection in older cats is possible it is more likely that what you are seeing is a result of an infection which the cat acquired as a kitten. This condition is frequently seen in stray and feral kittens as well as in places like barn cat colonies and rescue centres.

3. You see a feature of this disease is that some kittens and adult cats develop a chronic form of the disease, this means that may have recurrent bouts in later life. But most adult cats usually suffer much more minor symptoms than kittens and recover more quickly.

4. Since there is no effective direct treatment for the viruses which cause this disease treatment is often just supportive while the disease runs its course. That said a course of antibiotics will help stop secondary bacterial infections and antibiotic eye drops are often required, this combination can make all the difference. Other than this it is just a case of good nursing care and keeping the cat comfortable and eating and hydrated while it’s immune system builds up to tackle the disease.

Since antibiotics are prescription drugs your best plan is to have your local vet check your cat over ASAP and get treatment underway.
